Default ticking when driving.

I have a 94' cheerokee manual transmission. When driving there is a pretty loud ticking sound that can be heard coming from underneath. The ticking only happens when the vehicle is in motion, it persists even when i put the car into neutral, so i have pretty much ruled out the transmission. The ticking gets louder when i go faster. I have had trouble with the 4x4 linkages. Could the ticking be coming from the transfer case as the 4x4 grinds real bad when i try to use it. Note the ticking occurs in both 4x4 and 2 wheel drive. maybe the linkage isnt completely disengaging? any help is appreciated thanks.

Could be you have a leak on u exhaust manifold. The are know for cracking. New ones have ribs in then for vibrations.

with an exhaust leak you would here the ticking louder when it is cold and it would get a little quietr as it heats up, also it would be there even when you a not moving.

or all the u joints in both drivelines, could also be your u joints in the front axles. i would start with the drivelines. engine off in gear or park ebrake on get under it goto each u joint in driveline try to twist the driveline and move it up and down side to side if it moves ,most likely you need u joints,if you have the money change them all in that driveline at the same time, usually if you have one go out it will do some damage to the others, noticble or not.

if you have a chilton for your cherokke there is a adjustment procedure for your transfer case linkage, thats pretty easy to do, as the bushings in the linkage bracket wear you should adjust it.
