Ticking/Tinking from Flywheel cover
I'm getting a ticking sound coming from the flywheel cover area. I recently did a starter, transmission gasket, oil pan gasket and oil pump change. Nothing else what touched underneath. It sounds like something is moving around as it is not consistent with the rpms. Won't make any noise at start up, but once in gear and throttle it starts tinking. Under throttle it happens more. Also, when braking to a stop it gets faster than stops when the jeep stops.
Took the flywheel cover off, and looked while the tinking was going on, but can't find where it's coming from. Never had this sound before all the changes. Anyone have any ideas?

Make sure your starter is tight, look for any shiny spots on the flywheel that could indicate the starter is hitting the flywheel. Does it sound like a metal to metal sound?
One other thing to look at is the exhaust, did you have to loosen any of the brackets that hold the exhaust in place?mine make a rattle at idle because of the exhaust hitting the cross member.

Yeah checked all that. Flywheel is clean. Had the flywheel cover off and watched it at idle, nothing hitting at all. Sounds like it's on the engine side of the flywheel.
Starter is tight. But when I first installed it, it was grinding of some sort. Ending up having to put two washers on the top bolt to stop the grinding. Might put another one on see what happens.

When you pulled the starter out there was no washers correct?the plate between the trany and engine is all the shim you need,I would suggest you look at it again and see why it was grinding,it should have gone back together the way it was before.

I know this is wierd but conquence (cant spell) look at flywheel for a spiderweb crack around bolts to the torq converter you have to really look. look for black lines around bolts new starter hince more starting torq might have caused a previous crack to expand. Just a thought.

Well ended up putting two more washers on the top bolt of the starter and that got rid of the noise. Still not sure why that bolt was causing or how. But just glad I figured it out. Thanks for the advice guys.
