Ticking noise
Everynow and then wen I first start my 88xj up it ticks, sometimes lil noisy sometimes barely hear it, wen I drive and accelerate sometimes it ticks and sometimes it dont, wen it does tick it eventually stops, some times it gets quieter. I changed my oil and put some lucas engine stop leak treatment in, it first ticked real bad but now hardly does it after few days, someone told me its nothing, and that most jeeps have a small tick like that, any ideas? Is somthn major wrong? Its a,daily driver, drives and rides smooth as ever. purrs like a kitten and well taken care of.

my 89 xj also ticked a bit when i got it, did the same as you and changed oil and added lucas. seems to have stopped the number one and 2 cylinder valvetrain tick, but i still have a low end tick. but i also have a reman 4.0 in the garage goin in soon, so i am gonna tear the old one down and see what it is, before it becomes a 4.6 stroker. i have been told they all do it after they get to mileage like mine has (almost 250000). lol

Well mine has over 250000 miles on.the chassis butvtge motor was replaced few years ago . I think 2002, supposedly the odometer readin at the time of the swap was 200000 according to the dealership so I guessin it has now, around 50000miles on newish motor. Sometimes it sounds like tickin comin out the driver side floorboard lol. I was thinkin of tracking down used newish 4.0 just incase, lol hopin take it on trip to the beach bout 5hour drive . In few months so hopefully itll b good lol,

What brand of oil filter do you have on it?
And, read this about additives.

No lie the previous owners I dnt tgink kept tge maintenance uo to date, nasty oil on the first chabge abd thats wen I got it first, maybe just good engine cleaning? I used lucas oil stabilizer treatment with castrol high milwage oil 5w-30 same bosch filter, and tgis last oil change I used same only lucas stop leak engine stabilizer to help small leak and other seals that arent to bad to qorry bout having changed right yet, I used to stop leak on a 84tbird I owned it cured it all lol. Butghats wat im using , I think the motir pretty gunky from.previous owners

Take a peek in the oil filler hole and see what the sludge looks like.

Those Lucas oil additives are crap. Take one of the displays in the store that you turn the gear and watch the oil stick. Now, hook up a drill to and run it... Watch the foam show. There are YouTube videos of exactly what I'm referring to.
