Default Throttle is Sketchy

Hey guys, i've got an odd problem with my throttle being unsure of itself. I've already taken about half a can of throttle body cleaner to the TB just for good measure, and it turns out it wasn't that dirty in the first place. All the sensors are there and look like they're in good shape, nothing burned or rotted.

I'm running a '95 XJ with the 4.0, AW4, and 133k miles. Besides 30" tires, it's stock.

First, it idles just barely under the 1k rpm mark, cold or hot. The tranny seems to shift a little too high for my liking, usually at about 2300rpm; and if i'm going ~45mph, it won't shift into 4th gear until i speed up to ~50-55mph. It's not over-revving itself or anything, just high shift points. The other thing that is making me suspicious is that if using cruise control at ~45-50mph, going uphill or if the road is slightly bumpy, the throttle makes the rpm quickly vary about 200 rpm up and down. Also, if i change lanes and go over speed bumps, it goes crazy and down shifts and the rpm's go up and down very rapidly with a variance of about 200rpm.

I'm having a hard time determining if this is a tranny problem or a throttle problem. I know i need to change the fluid in the aw4, it's a little murky. Btw, it takes Dex/Merc III, right?

Thanks guys

Sounds to me like you might have a bad TPS. There are plenty of writeups on here on how to test it, all you need is a multi meter.

X2^ on the TPS check. Then I'd do a quick TV cable adjustment.

ok guys yesterday i swapped out the TPS and did a pan flush and refill, which netted about 4 quarts. the sketchy throttle problem is fixed, it's now a little more sure of itself and doesn't get thrown off by bumps on the road. It also goes into 4th at lower speeds. My idle is still at about 950 though for some reason, and now my problem is it's still shifting waaaay too high. I'm getting shift points of about 2500-3k rpm. Everything is smooth, but it's just that the shift points are so high. What's up with the TV cable adjustment?

The TV cable is very easy to adjust. You'll see it next to the throttle cable. The 'body' of the adjuster has a half moon, or D shaped button. With engine OFF, depress the button and slide the cable housing back into the adjuster body as far as possible. Release the button, then open the throttle to wide open position. You'll hear a ratcheting sound as the cable slides out. Done. Release the throttle and go for a joy ride. If the cable was out of adjustment, it should be better now. Glad you got your TPS straigtened out.

Just a suggestion, when "opening the throttle" use the gas pedal not the throttle body. You can open the T-body much more by hand than with the skinny pedal and you won't get a proper adjustment.
