Default Thinking of purchasing a Cherokee Chief

Hey guys. I found a 76 Cherokee chief. I think it had a 360, but the guy that has is put a 258 I6 and a 3 speed in it. The engine is very clean, new alternator, carb, battery cabels, and other parts. I have a few questions:

What kind of milage do you think it would get?
What axels would it have?
And what gears?

I was thinking of driving it for a while if it got desent milage, then later putting the axels in my wagon. Any input would be great! thanks

Think it is much heavier than an XJ and a carbed 258 is pretty fuel inefficent. So don't expect to pass that many gas stations before a refill. Some had D44s front and rear.

I think the engine it out of a truck. And think about this, The vehicle is allot heaver than an xj, so it has more momentum than a little cherokee, so once you get up to speed you can coast further because of all the momentum from the weight. Now what do you think?

Takes a lot of fuel to get that thing up to speed and to maintain that speed takes energy.
Newton says "A body at rest tends to stay at rest" which translates into if it is stopped thats how it wants to remain.
Law of conservation of energy......nah............ you look that up.

I thought about that. I dont think it would get great milage, like 15 - 20. Still better than a 360. Right?

The one i looked at had 6 hole lug pattern.
The main reason i was wanting to get it, was for the axels. They dave disk brakes in the front, and the front and rear end are passander drop. The same as my ******, so it would be easier to put the axels under it.

Those would be Dana 44s, as rear passenger drop indicates it is a quadratrac. Depending on where you live, I have a set that I would sell you that would probably be significantly less than buying a whole vehicle to get the axles.

Well, Im in idaho. The guy wants $200 for it, and the engine alone is worth that. And i think he would take less.

Yeah. I am thinking i am going to get it, and turn it into a cool offroader. Cut out the top, take off the doors, and the tail gate, maby lift it, but at least put big tires under it. It Will look cool, and get better milage because there will be less weight. And it sould tow the boat good.

I love those old Cherokees. For $200, I'd definitely buy it and start planning. The possibilities are endless!

If i get it, it wont be right away. I'm gona let the guy sit on it. He lives way out in the country, so its not going anywhere. But if i get it, i'll be sure to post pics. I think it should look really cool.
