We already have cross over steering. That is where the drag link goes from one side to the steering knuckle on the other.

Please excuse my ignorance,im pretty new to the Jeep thing. When my friend suggested the crossover steering,I looked it up online, and noticed it looked EXACTLY like the setup I am already running.Thought there was more to it,thats why I asked about it.

This crossover steering suggestion came from a guy that was a former XJ owner...Dont think ill be listening to his suggestions.

Get on craigslist and find someone parting out a grand and get the tire rod & drag assembly from them..
I've never paid more than 20.00 and someone else did the work for me; I just had to drive out to get it.

Or worst case scenario; someone on here can pull it & ship it for a fraction of what they are trying to sell it to you for.
Heck, now that I think about it I think that's the new price from an auto store.

You might even want to check out ebay, never know what you going to find on there..

Whats involved with that? Is it more complicated, more expensive? Would it be better to stay stock but use beefier components?
It is expensive to do but if you can do it yourself, you can save a heap. Your tie rod isn't a hard thing to do with the right tools...I would focus on that before you attempt a complete changeover.

It is bent, and is weaker then normal, could you bend it back? yes... but its isn't a good long term option. the V8 TRE is a good way to go on the cheap side. I would just upgrade to a inverted T 1 ton setup and do it once. just my 2 cents.

NOT true. the XJ comes with an "inverted Y" steering setup.

It is a good idea and a good way to go. however it can cost a lot to setup on a D30. You need a new pass side knuckle, and depending on your front end could need new calipers/rotors, ect... google cross over steering for D30 and there are lots of write ups about this. (using a GC knuckle to do cross over)

I would look into An inverted T setup that many companys sell if you are looking for an upgrade. Venders on here have some good options and other companies aswell. Frank Z speaks highly pf his setup, and I have read good things about rustys and clayton.

this is an inverted T also 1 ton upgrade.

rusty's option

Just as an FYI, Cross over steering has One link that goes from the steering box to the knuckle, and another link that goes knuckle to knuckle and the don't mount to each other. here is a pic of mine for refrence.

Not to pick nits here, but what you have is a high steer just as I do. The other type of steering that is not cross over has a drag link that goes parallel to the frame like early Doges, K series Chevies and early Toyotas. Cross over steering can come in different configurations, but if it crosses over, it is cross over steering.

not true. its only a cross over steering setup.

The definitions are-
Hy Steer - a steering linkage setup where both the draglink and tie rod are located above the springs.
Crossover steering - a steering system where the drag link and tie rod attach independently to the passenger side knuckle
Inverted T - a steering system where the tie rod attaches knuckle-to-knuckle, and the drag link attaches to the tie rod, usually near the right hand side.
Inverted Y - a steering system where the draglink attaches to the passenger knuckle, and the tie rod mounts from the draglink to the drivers knuckle.

but back to topic for OP...

XJs have an "Inverted T" steering. I can't say if the term is interchangeable with "crossover" but the Currie setup is same as stock, but way beefier & completely bolt-in. That is what I have. Many people run ZJ steering as a cheap but good upgrade. I carry 1 as a spare. Both can be done without major modification to your knuckles or other components.
