I have new t-stat and housing, new water pump, and I've flushed the system.

Right now it doesn't seem to be over heating, but its running rough, kinda like the timing is off but its controlled by the computer, so I don't know. It kinda sputters, its not getting all the power.

But I can't really test the over heating without it running better.

Here's what's up, she seems to be running "decent" at idle in park. Then when you put her in drive and at idle she just about dies and then idles back up ever second.

Check/clean intake sensors. Check for vacuum leaks.

I also live in AZ & while driving the Cherokee roundtrip from Phoenix to Tucson a few days ago I found the temp running high on the front leg of the trip. So down went the windows and up went the heater.... in August...did I mention I live in AZ?

When I got back I changed out the water pump, thermostat housing, thermostat, back flushed cooling system & cleaned off the radiator and condensor fins...& replaced serpentine belt.

Started the Cherokee up took it on highway and there was a considerable drop in operating temp. I was jacked...until I turned on the AC and the belt squealed like a stuck pig. BUZZKILL!

The squealing only last about five seconds then stopped. The squealing repeated for the next few days whenever the AC was used, otherwise it was quiet as a church mouse. I figured I either smoked the idler pulley bearings by over tightening the pulley or over tightened the serpent belt.

With no time left to work on it I brought it in to the dealer.

The answer was...I did NOT over tighten anything, in fact, quiet the opposite.I guess the reason I share this is because even though I thought I had tightened the belts too tight...I did not, so you may want to consider checking the belt again.

IAC, TPS, IAT and MAP sensors are all on or in the vacinity of the throttle body/intake manifold. Vacuum lines are small rubber/plastic tubes that directly/indirectly attach to the intake manifold. Some kind of shop manual would help u imensely.

i found out today that i did have a t-stat. i had bought a 195 to put in so the heat would work this winter. i found a 180 when i took it apart. it was stuck open a bit. i installed the 195 and it works perfectly. i will definitely have heat this winter.

i don't know what brand it was, although i replaced it with a 195 fail-safe. i didn't inspect the two side by side but they looked the same. i can't be completely sure the old one was sticking open or if it was just opening at a lower temp than it was supposed to. it is closed now. on an 80 degree day it wouldn't break 160 while driving 60-70 mph.

Thanks for the info/pics. It appears to not be a failsafe type t-stat and appears closed. 160 crusin' down the hi-way.....u could bottle and sell those.LOL

Not sure what the failure temp is on a 195 failsafe but, if at some point u don't have a heater or see 160 while on the hi-way, suspect the failsafe t-stat has failed.

It idles to the point of dieing and then idles back up every second and now it does that all the time, instead of while just driving..

Might want to start a new thread. Last several questions have nothing to do with a t-stat.
