So recently i picked up this 88 jeep Cherokee with aw4 and np242 4.0 renix era jeep xj. I've tested and replaced as many sensors as I could, replaced distributor, to no avail. Checked all grounds, got good compression, 115-156 across all six cylinders. New injector, good fuel pressure, new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, and jiggled everything i could. 02 sensor is good. Here's my problem. When my cam position sensor is plugged in the jeep hesitates, lugs and pops out the intake pretty bad. When i disconnect it, it stops. Runs good, no issues. Sometimes pops out intake but has no hesitation. Not even a whole new distributor fixed this. So i returned it and put the old one back in. I have not put a timing light on it. No blow by and great fuel pressure. Oil looks good. What could i be missing? I'm completely stumped....

I guess all that does is give the ECU a heads up weather it's #1 or #6 coming up. The ECU will figure it out pronto without it. Sink Pulse Generator?
Do you have #1 at 5:00, as viewed from the side, on your dizzy? It might even work with #1 at 11, but with the cam sensor maybe not.
Edit...well the dizzy would need to be indexed 180 out*.

Setting Your 4.0 at #1 TDC
With #1 spark plug removed, turn the engine over clockwise using the 3/4" front crankshaft bolt. You will see the degree marks on your front cover. Mark the 0 with chalk or white-out.You will see the timing mark on the balancer. Mark it with chalk or white-out. While turning the engine over, put your finger/thumb over #1 spark plug hole. As the mark on the balancer approaches the marks on the front cover, if you are coming up on #1 TDC, pressure in the cylinder will push on your finger. If there's no pressure, you're at #6 TDC and need to crank the engine over until you see the marks coming together and you get pressure. Set the mark on the balancer to the 0 mark on the front cover.
