I just did some fixin-up on my buddy's 93' XJ today ie: front calipers pads and rotors(fuct), heater valve(cracked)/heater hoses(dry rotted), pcv hose(cracked), and idler pulley. his front brakes were grinding so bad that the piston actually reached its travel limit and popped out of the caliper causing an obvious fluid leak and no brakes. Ive never seen it that bad before, we both agreed it was kinda funny, all said and done.

Just one question: Why did he wait so long to replace them?

I would seriously suggest you tell your buddy not to wait that long to change brakes. Safety

He was lucky. 1 panic stop and he could have been hurt or worse, he may have hurt someone else. As mud says Safety

All safety issues aside, the longer you wait the more things need to be replaced.

yeah I preached to him about the benefits of preventative maint. I think after this he might be more weary of what he needs to have checked out. Funny thing, when we went mudding, his heater valve broke. while we were fixing that problem I made a mention that his serp. belt was badly cracked and should be replaced soon. turns out I was right, It broke later that day. I take good care of mine and it repaid the favor when we were in the mud. (with the exception of the fender flare, but i just pulled the fender back out and reinstalled the flare. 2" extended bump stops should be here soon)

One of our old neighbor's daughter asked me to look at her brakes once because she had a really bad noise coming from them...

The entire face was ground off the passenger side rotor... It was literally the fins in the middle and the back and that was it...

Another time my wife says to me the brakes on the ZJ were making all kinds of noise after she made a panic stop.... I get to looking and the rotor has completely sheared off the center hub part... YIPES!!!!

Yeah man brakes can be scary if they are not well maintained.
