Does it work if you remove the trailer tap. Have you tested the circuit with a meter? where is the pwoer stopping. The park/tail lights, Signals and brakes are on 3 seperate circuits, the brakes and signals recieve switch power though the ignition switch. So check the Ignition switch.

Does the 1992 Cherokee have a hatch? (I have a 2000).
My x's 2001 Cherokee developed a similar problem (no brake lights, no directionals, no hazard lights) and I was able to track it back to a damaged wiring harness where it winds through the hatch (actually right in the rubber flex fitting between the body and the hatch).
Major PITA to repair. I chose to cut the whole harness, route it OUTSIDE the rubber flex coupling and then splice the whole thing back together. No exactly a "pretty" fix but at least she has all lights functioning now.
I honestly HOPE that's not the problem with your Cherokee.

Humm I thought the wires cane along the floor and threw the rear side panel but i will look into that ...are your lights actually on the hatch or to the side of it on your 2001

there is a turn signal/hazard relay under the headlight switch its grey, mounted horizontally. My turn signals didn't work and that was the culprit.

I am having the same problem with my 93 cherokee. No brake lights or hazards and i cant figure it out. fuses are fine, brake light switch is fine. and my turn signals work. And you say there is no relay? What could be the problem?

Also have the same problem!! No buzzing sound heard though like some other have mentioned. Here is what people are saying it could be :
Multifunction switch - not sure how to test that, is it linked to the brake lights?
A short or bad ground somewhere - How do you know/see if a wire is shorted ?
Relay - I heard you can do a "jumper" wire, between tan and red relay under the dash
Man im no electrician..this is all new to me!

I'm having a similar problem with the brake lights. One tail light works, but when you hit the brakes, the side with the functioning light turns off, and the opposite side brake light comes on. I tried replacing the sockets, and bulbs but it didn't help. I also followed the wiring throughout the trunk area, but didn't see anything wrong. Where are the grounds located, or does anyone else have any ideas?? Any help is really really appreciated.

Just tossn this out there. You can take a long wire, like maybe an old vacuum cleaner cord and attach it right to battery negative. Then take the other end and physically put it right on the bulb socket, (or anything that should be grounded.)
More than once I've found bad grounds doing that. Once I found the whole bed of my Toyota truck was not grounded! Also the tail-light grounds on my 90 are not designed well, I've fixed them twice.
Anyway it's an easy test. A shorter wire and using jumper cables will do also.
