Default tether anchor for child seat

Hey, I have a 98 XJ and I need to put in a tether anchor for my kids car seat. Does anyone know the best way to do this aside from paying $90 (plus install) for a $10 part at the dealer?

Thanks in advance.

Default Only one way.

I am actually a Child Safety Seat Technichian for the Fire dapartment I work for and the dealer is the only safe way. If it is a forward facing seat the tether can be used but not on a rear facing. Also the tether does add some stability to car seats but it is not a necessity for the child seat to protect your child. Best thing to do is if you feel it is needed than have the dealer install this. Also it is a good idea to go to a local police or fire dept and see if they have Child safety seat techs on staff. Because 98% of all parents install there car seats incorrectly and cause harm to the child. For example all the little hanging mirrors and toys and sunshades people use are really dangerous and become projectiles during an accident. Just make sure you use the right belt path on the car seat and it should only shift less than two inches at the belt path and that is secure enough. It will shift a lot more at the top and that is normal (big misconception) so just grab at the bottom of the seat and try to move it and thats how you judge it. One more thing, if it has the harness straps the clip on thise to clip them together needs to be across the childs nipple line not at the stomach. There is a lot more to check to like how to make sure the seat belt locks (and not just emergency locking where it locks under breaking) but lock 100% of the time. And if there is a need for that locking clip, you might not need it and if used wrong can be bad. Just pm me for any questions you might have, this is serious stuff when it comes to child safety and I would be happy to help.

it's not a matter of safety, obviously my child's safety comes before all else. I just know you can buy your own kit and install it yourself, just need specs on how to do it the best way in my XJ. The dealer is giving me a huge run around on the whole thing. One dealer even said there was no such thing for my XJ.

Don't know if you got my pm my computer was acting up and i lost connection. The kits are fine and well but like you said the specs are hard to come by. In factory installed tether anchors there is a thick metal plate welded to an extra roof frame rail that is there just for the strength of the anchor. Just in case you didnt get my pm---Moving it to the passenger side is fine, middle is safest but the side seats are safe to. The tether is not a required piece on the car seat, some parents think if it is there I have to use it. Like I said it makes the carseat more stable but the lap belt install is fine by itself. Using the shoulder belt is pretty easy to. Just install as normal just feed shoulder and lap portion through the same hole as if it was the middle belt. And to make it stay locked tight see if the actual buckle on the belt will cause it to tighten and stay. To test just put the seat in press down into the bottom of the carseat and pull on shoulder portion, it should stay tightened. In my 2000 xj sport the belts are designed this way. If not the retractor could be a switchable retractor, just pull the seat belt all the way out and as you let it back in it should lock every inch or so. If you have problems or just wanna see it done just pm me your email (i guess it might be on your profile) and I will take a video of me doing this and show you how to do it and email it to you. If this needs to be made into a permanant post I would be happy to do a full write up. Just dont know how to make it permenant.

Default More info

Found something on NHTSA website.

"What many people don't understand is that the lap portion of the seatbelt is the part responsible for keeping the car seat secure. The shoulder belt portion must be "locked down" if the lap portion isn't locked on its own, which is what usually happens. Dodge and Chrysler vehicles, however, have a special mechanism on the lap portion of their shoulder/lap belt that locks the lap belt securely, so that the shoulder belt portion becomes irrelevant.

It's important to remember that, after a car seat is installed, the seatbelt's latch plate should NOT lie against the curved opening of the car seat. If it does, try to make the buckle shorter, even if it means twisting it a full turn or two around. If that still doesn't work, your car seat might not be the right choice for your car."

The special mechanism they are refering to is the part that actually buckles in to the reciever. If it moves freely up and down the belt then it doesn't have it. However if it has an extra piece causing the belt to be fed through two seperate holes then it does. Just like a uniform belt or a strap on a duffel bag, same concept. Thought this might explain better. See pics. First doesn't second pic does.

The dealer should install tether anchors for free! see attached:
TSB#
23-029-08
DISCUSSION:
User-ready child restraint tether strap anchors will be provided in passenger cars in the
2000 Model Year, and in light trucks in the 2001 Model Year and later. Tether straps
improve the performance of child restraints in collisions. Because of the publicity that has
accompanied the "Fit for a Kid" Program, owners of earlier products are expected to
approach dealers for the
free provision and installation of the anchor hardware.

Chrysler is offering child seat tether anchors for the selected vehicles listed above. Each
tether anchor is packaged in a kit containing all necessary parts and a detailed instruction
sheet.
NOTE: This bulletin is provided to identify the parts and labor operation numbers
necessary to install a Child Seat Tether Anchor. Each dealer is encouraged to
install these kits based on customer request and Chrysler will reimburse any
Chrysler / Dodge / or Jeep dealer installing these kits regardless of vehicle
age or mileage.

Call your local dealer and provide them with the tsb# they should already know about it and do your install for free. If you get any hassle phone the Chrysler customer assistance hotline.

Default Non locking Shoulder Belts

I have a 99 Dodge Intrepid. I know its not a Cherokee but I have a question with the seat belts and Child seats.

I currently have a Britax Child Seat that is installed in the center using the lap belt and a tether anchor which I actually bought from a dealer (was not easy to get the part) and put in myself, went to a dealer to help find the hole for it.

I will have another child soon so I want to put the rear facing child seat that has a base in the center and then put the forward facing Britax on the side.

I plan on moving the tether to the side.

My question is...

The Shoulder belts on the 99 Intrepid only lock in a braking situation. Should I call the dealer and see if they can put one in that has a locking ratchet or is that not needed. The belt clip male end has a mechanism that slides slightly and appears to hold the lap part from moving when you pull out on the center of the lap part. Is this all that is needed.

I don't exactly understand the posts above of the belt buckles. They don't look exactly like the one in the intrepid.

Thanks

Elroy,

If the shoulder portion doesn't lock then yes it will have a moving part on the male end. To test it just sit in that seat, buckle the belt and pull the shoulder tight, then try and lift your hips, if it doesn't loosen around your lap then that is all you need. But just to make sure, pull the shoulder portion all the way out till it stops, let it back in about 2 or 4 inches and try to pull it back out if it doesn't then it will just lock under braking as you said. Just try all this and hit me up after. If you still need help let me know and I can get you all kinds of videos and junk on how to do it. Good luck

In that post it says for 2000 model and newer, wouldn't they say no to the 98 model?
