Default Testing A/C compressor clutch

Hello again
My a/c isn't working. It used to kick in without making the air cold - although this could be down to a massive vacuum leak meaning it's all stuck in defrost. Anyway, the clutch has stopped kicking in now which it used to do every 20s or so. I'd like to give 12V to the clutch to see if it does still work and also I'm trying to trace an annoying noise.
The noise sounds like a bad power steering pump (but is constant, even if I move the steering wheel). I'm sure the noise used to go away when the A/C kicked on, but when I had the serp belt off last weekend I span the a/c pulley and it was free - no grating or noise at all.
Anyway, the noise is doing my head in. I want to fix the noise, and the vacuum leak and hopefully the a/c eventually. I'd like to work out if it IS the a/c by jumping the a/c clutch manually.
Could someone tell me how to do that?
Cheers!
Morat
