I had a similar problem, don't know how much use i'll be here, but i'll tell ya my story.

My temp gauge never worked since I bought the Jeep. I went down to the auto parts store, picked up a temperature sending unit for like $18 (or $28...can't remember). I got home to put it on and it turns out it didn't even match the temp sending unit at the front of my engine (right above the center pulley). It was about half the size.

I take it back and they take a look. They saw it didn't match up, but only had one result coming up in their system. I refunded it and went to Napa. I got the right part there, put it on, but the temp gauge still wasn't working. I forgot about it for a week or two, then I opened up a Haynes manual and saw the connector was in the very back of the engine, and it was just unplugged. So that fixed it.

Moral of the story: Check your connector. If it's plugged in, go to Napa. Even the sales clerk at Autozone was like "hmm, at least now I know not to get mine here if it goes bad"
