If it's not full then there would be air in the system.

Isn't there air in the bottle and isn't the bottle part of the system?

The bottle return is on the bottom so unless its empty your not pulling air back in

I suggest you take a closer look at your bottle. The hose attaches to the top but it attaches to a built in tube that runs to the bottom of the overflow bottle.

I doubt there's anyone here that's taken any closer look at the entire XJ cooling system, including the bottles, especially on the open system.

I don't know about that... I just had an inspection camera in my entire cooling system, block and head included.

Looking for anything stuck in the block or head. When I took one of the drain plugs out of the block to install an aftermarket temp gauge I had to chip a chunk of crap out... Wanted to make sure I didn't crap stuck in system elsewhere.

Some "mechanics:?" are to lazy to remove a freeze plug, they just drive it on in.
In my opinion, that's cause for firing them on the spot!

Fine. I have a '98 engine in my '92 so I lost the stock gauge.
