Default temp gauge

i have a 89 xj renix and im converting to open cooling system. i wana add a temp gauge inside the cab a aftermarket one. where is the best place to mount the sensor? in the back of the head a ditch the stock sensor or in the tstat housing from a newer xj that i will be adding to my renix? i was going to make a t t-fitting on the t-stat housing so i can use temp gauge and variable fan controler readings from there. let me know what u all think and whats the best gauge to get.

I'd say put one sensor in the the newer style stat cover and the other sensor in the 3/4" heater hose, close to the stat cover. Newer XJs read coolant temp at the front of the motor vs the rear.

There's only one heater hose on the stat cover so as close to the stat cover as room permits. I've made the sensor fittings out of copper tubing nipples and brass fittings however Trail Tech makes a digital temp gauge complete with the 19mm hose mount/sending unit. The key to accurate temp reading is mounting the sending unit so that tip is directly in the flowing coolant. What sensor is mounted where shouldn't matter.....the stat cover is where the hottest coolant is exiting the motor.

I don't know.....never tried that unit. Wires can be cut/spliced for whatever length is needed. It's much easier to see temp fluctuations under different driving conditions with a digital gauge vs an analog gauge.
