Default Temp control **** binding

98 XJ 4.0L

The temp control **** in the cab is binded on me right now. I know there is a cable to some type of control box under the passenger side dash. My question is, Can i remove that box, take it apart and see whats going on? Can that control box be taken apart. By control box i mean the part that the cable attaches too.
Thanks

And has this happened to anyone else?

OK i have done a little digging in the FSM and i believe my blend air door inside the heater a/c housing where the heater core is is stuck.
Does anyone know how to free this door without taking the whole heater a/c housing out. I would have to drain my refrigerant and coolant. Not something i want to do

Yeah but the FSM doesn't give tricks or troubleshooting techniques for situations like this. I figured this might be a common problem with XJ's and someone would have a trick on how to free this door without taking the whole thing apart. And if i have to take the whole thing out and apart, what kind of time frames am i looking at? From my reading in the past on CF, there have been a lot of
people with heater core issues so i thought some would know some tricks about this this issue or time frames.

Warthog...

You will have to lay on your stomach and stick your nose under the passenger's side of the dash.

Trust me on this one...I've had to do it three times.

Your head will almost be against the center console (if you have one).

Turn your head to the right and look towards the firewall.
Shine a flashlight...Its dark and scary down there.

You will see the temp control cable.
With a free hand slide the dash control back and forth.

When the cable gets to the point where it wants to "bend"...grab a hold of it right at the clip and slide it straight. The clip on the blend door is designed to adjust ("give")

On the three I have done the end of the cable is about 2" PAST the clip.

Tried to attach image...sorry its like 10 degrees outside...shivering to much to take a clear pic.

If that isn't dedication, I don't know what is.

Yeah it is, Thanks howler for that reply, right after i read it i went out and ours looks different from each other. i discod the cable (very stiff cable) and come to find out, either the cable or the **** is binding, not the AC/heater unit. Which is a great thing. Thank yall for all the help, I have still not fixed the problem but since i disco'd the cable. i can control it manually under the dash.
Thanks again

my 98 is doing the same thing, i can turn the temp **** anywhere in the hot range but it will not move into the cold range. i can force it to turn into the cold range but as soon as i let go of the **** it shoots back to the hot range, like a spring.

on another note i also need to change my heater core but dread pulling everything out that has to come out lol

So was the cable only used <'00? On both the '00 I have now and the '01 I had before, the blend was electronically controlled.

Sorry i never updated this but i figured it out. If you follow the cable down. IIRC you will see where the cable goes into or comes out of a tube. it was kinking itself right there. i used some duck bill pliers and straightened it out. Quick fix. Hopefully this helps. It has been a while since i fixed it so i may have some things backwards

My XJ is doing that now. Won't turn left (to cold), will only stay about centered or to the right (to heat)... what did you do? How do I fix this?

It's starting to get hot here in South Carolina...
