Asking for a friend that doesn't have an account on here. My friend has a 1988 Jeep Cherokee 2.5l with the aw-4 automatic and his TCM has bit the dust. Currently, he is having no luck finding a replacement TCM. Could he use a TCM from a 4.0l with aw-4? What's everyone's thoughts about it?

Just did a quick look at the diagrams side by side with blurry eyes and first cup of coffee, but they appear to be the same.
That said, has he done the connector refreshing Tip 10 and dipstick tube refreshing Tip 1?
And, the tCM needs to come out of an 87 to 90. The color of the connector should be the same color as the harness plug.

What are the symptoms? It's somewhat rare for the TCU itself to die. Being an 88, I would check the fuse in the wiring harness near the TCU first. Do all of cruisers tips for refreshing the ground and check the TPS.

Thank you guys for the suggestions. I passed them along to him and waiting to hear back from him. He hasn't told me his issues. Hopefully, it's what you guys suggestions but in his worst case, I got a tcm that been sitting and collecting dust that I probably give him it if that's the case.

The 1988 parts manual does show different part numbers, but I'd guess the only difference is the shift points might different..
