Use the 89 TCU and the sensors that go on an 89 AW-4. (87-90 really.) The Renix puter likely will have no idea what a 99 TCU is thinking, and vice a versa. If you have a real computer or can otherwise access the minutia in my signature link, the pinout's for the solenoids are there.(we miss you CCKen!)

Trying to understand this. In the NAXJA thread lawsoncl in a similar case said use the TCU that goes with the transmission and don't worry about the data cable because Renix ECU doesn't talk to the TCU. Is this correct?

Are you sure that's an 89 TCU pinout? FSM says 89 uses D1 in the TPS connections (among other things).

lawsoncl quote in other forum:
Grabbing the entire 98 trans, xfer case, TCU, 98 NSS, and the 98 wiring harness between the TCU and Trans should work with some minimal splicing required. Other than the wiring between the TCU and tranny/NSS, I think you've only got seven wires that need spliced into the vehicle? +12v ign off, +12v ign on, brake switch, ground, backup lights, tps sensor (see note below about the TPS), and maybe a wire from the NSS to the start relay (interlock so you can only start with it in park).

One thing to note is that the 89 has a dual output Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) providing a "normal" output for the engine, and a "reversed" input for the TCU. The 98 only had a single "normal" output that's fed to both the engine computer and the TCU. So during the swap you need to splice into the other output from the TPS.

The 89 engine computer doesn't talk to the TCU, so don't bother hooking up the data wires on the 98 TCU (in fact, the data wire on the 89 just rruns to the yellow diagnostic connector under the hood). The 89 had the power/comfort switch on the dash that's no longer used, so you can skip that wire as well.

I probably have copies of the relevant portions of the wiring schematics if you need help sorting out the wire colors.

I don't recall if the throttle cable between the 98 trans and the 89 trans is different at the throttle body end. The speedo cable will need to go into the xfer case instead of the back of the 2wd tranny.
Work in Progress feel free to edit:

89

+12v ign off D14
+12v ign on D16
brake switch C10
ground D3
backup lights Switch
TPS D2

99
+12v ign off 25
+12v ign on 26
brake switch 23
ground whatever
backup lights 18
TPS 17

89 also has a dedicated "Shift Point Logic" ground at C5. Cruiser thinks this is important. You should probably do something with that.

89 colors:

Sorry of me maybe. Maybe acting a little to big for my britches! I had gathered a general understanding that you just want to match your year about everywhere. Bumper to bumper, mixing things can cause real problems or a nag light. The same sensors the puters expect, presumably on the same wiring harness, match them. That approach likely works, but it seems there is more.

Butting out now, hope I didn't cause too much trouble!

BTW, I did "hack" my TCU controls a bit, but I'm clueless on details of other things they are up to besides shifting.
