Ok so I did a few donuts in 2wd then my roommate wanted to dout that the XJ could do it in 4lo so stupid me dropped it down and proceeded with the donuts granted it was in the grass but was pretty stupid on my part. 4lo will engage for about 2ft now and then it pops out and grinds but if I go to neutral and back to drive it works for 2ft more. Did I stretch the chain or chip a tooth? 4hi and 2wd work perfect just not 4lo.

Adjust your linkage:
Transfer Case Linkage Adjustment
Straight from the FSM:
SHIFT LINKAGE ADJUSTMENT
(1) Shift transfer case into 4L position. (make sure your shifter is fully in the 4L position)
(2) Raise vehicle.
(3) Loosen lock bolt on adjusting trunnion (Fig.
87).
(4) Be sure linkage rod slides freely in trunnion.
Clean rod and apply spray lube if necessary.
(5) Verify that transfer case range lever is fully
engaged in 4L position. (you can do this under the vehicle at the transfer case)
(6) Tighten adjusting trunnion lock bolt.
(7) Lower vehicle
And check your engine and trans mounts!!!

Or take your t-case shifter bezel off and look for loose change. That was my problem except it was 4hi that wouldn't engage but 4lo worked fine

As much as I dislike jesus juices, I've been using this "Instant Quiet" in my TC for the last several fluid changes. It seems to work okay.
I bought a used 242 TC with 109,000 on it and when I drained what fluid there was in the TC it came out looking like coffee with triple cream and had bronze in the fluid. Filled with fresh ATF and drove it then redrained. This ATF had Bronze it it. Refilled and let it go.
It was making noise so I added a bottle of Instant Quiet at the next change. The noise immediately went down. I've been using it since.
In that a TC will run on anything, including vomit, This stuff couldn't possibly hurt.....I hope.
