Default Taking my xj to the mechanic for a looking at after work

Started on my way to work. My xj was pulling to either side when i braked, plus there was smoke coming from the under carriage, along with not increasing speed while accelerating without extra effort on the accelerator , nothing lit up on the console, and the oil level was good so was the transmission fluid, the engine however did not cool down while driving. I am thinking transmission for loss of power and a bad caliper, in addition im adding the engine but hopefully not it has 186000+ miles but well maintained. Would love to hear from anyone with a similar situation.

When was the last time the brakes were done?

Sounds like a seized caliper. It’s a little difficult to accelerate when the brakes are applied. I hate that burnt clutch smell.

If it's not a seized caliper piston, it's sticky guide pins.

could be a collapsed hose...or even the dreaded steering knuckle groove...can cause the caliper to get wedged

There was a fellow who posted some months back about a similar symptom and it turned out his calipers had worn notches (detented) where the pads slide on their slots. They would bind in the notches and not fully release. Not sure how it was resolved but that was the cause of the problem.

Notches need to be welded and ground back to smooth.
