Takes a bit to start
Hey everybody,
Been a while since I was last here... been super busy. Anyways, I am starting to wonder about a starting issue on my 87 XJ. It starts every time, but it seems to turn over 5 times before it starts up. It is the same whether it is cold or warmed up. I know that it used to turn over 3 times then start. Since it went from 3 to 4 and now 5, I figure I should start getting some advice asap. I love this jeep and want it to run in top shape always. Any advice is appreciated.
Thank you in advance

Thank you for the fast response. I have done a tune up in the last 5k... It has actually been doing this for quite some time. What is the best way to do a check on the fuel pressure? The fuel pump is less than 10k miles old too if that helps

This question comes up alot.
Your jeep is a "Renix" The computer system was built by an Aeronautics company and must see 300RPM before it will fire, this is your delay. My jeep regularly takes 5 seconds.
If you want it to start quicker, you have to get to that 300rpm faster. Easiest way to do this is thicker power and ground cables to the starter.

^ Pretty much everything you can do, sounds like a good tuneup.
I would get better power cables if you really need it to start faster.
5-90 sells some, IIRC he goes all the way to 0ga.

the stock cables are "just enough" to get power to the starter. but they have added resistance because of this. This added resistance is lost to heat.
Bigger cable means and easier path for the electricity, less resistance, less energy lost to heat, more energy produced in the starter.

Ok I will try that for sure. Is there anything else you guys can think of? It turns over pretty quick... it doesnt have to put much effort in to turning over at all in my opinion
