On the low HP/TQ 4.0 go with the smaller dia. for extra clearance, if you had 500HP and up then a larger exhaust is needed. You want more clearance for off road use so high and tight is the way to go.
I would never use a high dollar muffler on any off road 4.0 XJ as they get beat on and dragged on trees, rocks, etc. caved in and torn off. Its just a fact in off roading them and having fun, never saw a muffler skid plate

so you are saying 2.25"? I can buy a borla for less than $90, then the muffler shop up the street said they can do the pipe for $40, and I can guarantee no fitment issues with them. that was for 2.5" BTW, i am sure that 2.25" will probably be same or a little less

stainless pipe, Borla universal 2 1/4 Stainless muffler. 2 1/4 stainless cat, and $40 to have it custom put on.
