Default tailpipes

ok so i have a 1995 Cherokee sport with the 4.0. The exhaust is ready to come off. In the bronco world we found an extremely cheap mandrel bent 3" tailpipe meant for a different vehicle but it just so happened to work and only was $30.00, do we have any of these little crown jewels in the cherokee world?

Not that I'm aware of, it's a tight area for exhaust to go through without rubbing on the shackle or fuel tank.

Midwest Auto Parts has AP exhaust parts. Bought a tail pipe for my '99 from them.

How do you want it to sound?

If you want it to sound like stock, go with Walker. The muffler will cost you about $35. The tail pipe will run you about $25. So figure $60 for parts, plus whatever it costs to install it if you have someone else do it. It will be quiet like the stock muffler for not a whole lot of money.

If you want it to sound like a giant lawn mower, go with Flowmaster. I know them's fightin' words around here, but honestly I can't figure why anybody would want to make his XJ sound like that.

If you want it to sound good (deep rumble with no drone), you're going to have to bump up to a Borla, Banks, Gibson or similar cat-back from a reputable company. You don't really get the full effect unless you also install a header.

I have more than $1200 in my exhaust from the manifold back, but I was going for a specific level of performance and a specific sound. If I had an XJ that wasn't heavily modded and just needed to replace a muffler that had rotted off, I would go with Walker and be done with it.

Have you tried the Walker tail pipe?

Read some reviews on it for the Jeep XJ.

I did, so I stayed away from it.

Nope. I've heard them, and they sound like stock. Walker also gets good reviews on Amazon.

I haven't read the negative reviews you mentioned, but I would guess they have to do with build quality. Their parts are cheaply made aluminized steel with crush bends. There are much better exhaust parts out there, but not for the price. If you take it to a local muffler shop to get a pipe made, the overwhelming majority of them are going to use the same grade pipe on a crush bender. You end up with the same thing.

I wouldn't put that Walker pipe on my current XJ with the stroker. I went with Gibson stainless. But if I had one that was all stock, nothing special about it, just used to get around town, I would definitely consider it. Especially if, like OP, I was looking for a cheap alternative.

I was actually looking at getting a borla muffler and was trying to find a tailpipe to go with it. The muffler can be had relatively cheap, I just can justify buying the whole borla system, because of the mark up.

Hell I went to a local muffler shop and got a custom bent tailpipe with a new muffler for $92 75 out the door It was a better fit (tighter) than from the factory with more clearance and no rattles either.
