Default T-Stat won't open

Just swapped a new motor into my 92 xj. Was one tooth off on the timing so it was not starting, but thanks to smart people helping on here, it runs now. Whew.
That being said, I've run into a new issue. It seems my t-stat won't open & she starts getting hot.
Cant be a series of bad t-stats. My question is what if the new water pump I put on there is flowing the wrong direction. Would that cause what I'm talking about? I took the t-stat out completely & it runs really cool. Like 160. I don't mind, but I've heard cool running is not good for mileage & such.
How do I test this theory? What direction should the coolant be flowing?
The fact that it stays cool now tells me the radiator is fine so I have no idea what else it could be.

Thoughts?

I would start with testing the tstat. Put it in a pot of boiling water and see if it opens.

I'd suggest u NOT put the stat in boiling water.....bring the water temp up slowly using a cooking thermometer so u can see what "open temp" is. A 195 stat should be wide open, or close to it, before the water boils.

How about going to the dealer and getting a new one? Part number 83501426. I'm sick and tired of all the crappy stats out there, even from companies like Stant.

I agree. I have had mixed luck even with Stant.

Because of that, I buy my stats ONLY from Jeep. Never had a Mopar stat fail in 38 years of wrenching. And boy, that is a heck of a lot of thermostats!
