Default SYE

ive been reading all the threads about lifts and tires and stuff, and i just wanted to clear up what size lift really requires a SYE. ive heard many different answers to this, and i just wanted to clear it up, and can a SYE be avoided by lowering your transfer case?

Unfortunately it depends on the Jeep. Newer Jeeps used the low pinion TJ style D30. They have a few more issues with lifts than the high pinion design. Yes, you can help some of the issues with a drop kit, but it decreases ground clearance, and for some that is a big deal. I have a drop on my 87 with 6.5" lift, and have no problems with it whatsoever. I also don't have many GC isues due to the drop. HTH!!

so if i were to put a 3.5 or 4.5 on a 2000 cherokee, would there be a good possibility that i would need a SYE? im most likely not going to be doing much tricky trail riding, mainly just playin around in the mud, so im not really worried about ground clearance, i just want to fit bigger tires

As COS stated it depends on the Jeep, but with yours being a 2000 most likely you will need one for even a 3.5". You may be one of the few later model guys that can get by without one but it would be rare. T/C drops also add in a variety of other issues besides clearance. It strains the motor mounts and changes fan angle wih the radiator which may cause overheating and fan clearance issues. There are other issues but they are all of a diminishing nature of importance after the first two I mentioned.

I got away with just buying a longer driveshaft with an approx 4" lift. so for a cheaper solution to an SYE, check out a driveline shop

i have a 99 sport with 3.5" and it was really bad before i put the drop in it. the drop did help the vibes but put more strain on my engine mounts due to the angle and now im thinking about an sye....

I think if you do a sye you need a drive shaft too. not sure though. Mine came with an sye and ds from previous owner. had work done at the shop for both and it was like 1200 total with parts and labor that the previous owner paid. sounds like a rip off to me, glad it wasn't me. but yea i test drove a 2000 with a 4 inch lift and no sye, had a lot of vibrations at higher speeds. maybe stick to a 3 inch lift with a transfer case drop or a 2 inch lift? 30 inch tires? these other people could probably help out a little more but im trying haha

well at 3 inches on lift my driveshaft binded up on the lift at full extension, but not on the ground....my 4.5 inch lift i just install the drive shaft was binding at half entension...and syes dont have to be expensive...i just picked up fron the junkyard a rubicon express full 4.5 inch lift kit, brake lines and all and a 231 t case with an sye already installed just had to change the planetary gearset to match the splines on the input shaft, and a drive shaft...i got it all for 300 bucks so...just shop around it can get done
