Default Swaping instrument clusters?

Hey guys my 94 XJ came with the very basic instrument cluster ( fuel guage and speedo and thats it, the rest are just lights )

My question is that if I go to a junk yard and find a cluster with the water temp and oil pressure guages will it just be plug and play? or do i have to swap out the senders for the guages and wire in the tach??

Any help is appreciated

Thanks

Pulkl the cluster off of a 91-96 XJ as the older models had speedo cables rather than electronic and the 97 and newer have digital odometers that aren't compatible. Be warned that the odometer will be different, but yes, pull the gauge cluster and the temperature and oil pressure sending units from the donor vehicle and you will get a fully functional cluster. I did it and it was easy.

not too worried about the milage since mine says exempt on the title because of the year of the vehicle. So the tach is just plug and play then??

Yup. There are 2 electrical connectors and they are the same for the non-tachy and the tachy variety so it is a direct plug and play so long as you have the sending units to read the temp and oil pressure.

Cool

Yes this is a great way to upgrade. Cheap too IF it works the 1st time. here is where i am at is with the 2nd cluster from my local JY ($17) I have everything working except the oil press. Used the sender from the 1st donor & when that didn't work I bought a NEW one ($25). So with the failure of the second oil press gauge I suspect a bad wire/short. Any ideas? The oil pressure gauge is "pegged" all the way to the right. Lost 88,000 miles in the process

when you bought the oil pressure sender did you make sure they knew you had a guage and not a light?? because it literally states with a guage or with a light. They almost gave me the wrong one .... If your sure you got the right one then you must have an issue with that wire, but i would think that if the there was an open in the wire it would have caused the light to come on.

There are two sending units one for the dunny lights and one for gauges you have to get the one for gauges.
