Default Stupid Question..Quick Answer

I know this sounds completly stupid but does my thermostat in my 94 ZJ 5.2 go in with the spring facing the intake mainfold, or does the spring face up toward the hood. i am having a hell of a time assesing cooling issues. Also any adverse affects from running it with no thermostat for a little while to asses the cooling issues. Any input is greatly appreciated. I think previous owner messed this thing up.

Get it warm and check for cold spots in the radiator.
