stumble with huge cloud of white/blue smoke
It has happened to me twice in the same spot on my ride home from work. When I get off the highway on the exit ramp I have to take this big sweeping right hand turn (180 degree turn) to come to a stop light. I then have to turn right.
The first time it happened (a week ago) I basically came to a rolling stop (light turned green as I was stopping) and then took off. The jeep popped a couple of times and basically stumbled, then power came back. I looked in my rear view mirror and there 2 huge clouds of smoke (white with a small tint of blue). It never happened again till today.
Today I came around the same exit ramp curve and came to a stop at the light. I sat for 30 seconds and took off. This time there was only one pop with another huge cloud of smoke.
Does anyone know what could be happening? Someone told me maybe water in tank and when I go around the corner it makes its way to the pump. Not sure on that one. Just in case I put some treatment in it tonight. I drive the vehicle every day and fill up usually once a week.
Another thought was a bad seal somewhere and I am getting oil in the intake. Not sure on that one either.
It is an '88 with a 4.0. Any help would be appreciated.

get it on a reader and see if there are any codes that have stored, but not tripped the CEL. it does sound like your burning oil in that cloud of smoke. i would question the head gasket. what year is it?
never mind. its a 99... duh... ah, well. have you checked all fluids? or had any other issues?

I can now get this to happen pretty much anytime I go around that same curve. When I start to turn right I get some stumbling and clouds of smoke from what I now think is coming from the engine area. I don't know for sure though.
It has never happend anywhere else other than after this big turn on this exit ramp.
Anyone have any suggestions?

How much gas is in the tank when this happens? I have a very similar turn I have to make when I go to school. I use the same amount of gas every week, so come Thursday (around a quarter tank or less) when Im late to my 9am class, I always end up taking that 180 kinda quick, and guess what happens....cuts out, sputters and than goes back to normal after about 3 seconds. Fuel pump picks up air, or just doesn't pick up fuel during that turn due to the centripetal force acted on the liquid in the tank ( pushing it against the walls, away from the pump). Than again, I don't usually see smoke or hear pops...
