Default Stuck hood latch 2001 cherokee 4.0 4wd

Hi everyone, trying to change the water pump on a 2001 Cherokee 4.0 4wd and the dang hood wont unlatch, any suggestions on how to get to the rods to pull them and open it up? Thanks so much, very frustrating just trying to do one thing and this happens.

There is a couple videos on this:

Does the cable feel like it is pulling?
I would try pressing down on each corner up front and try again.
Might want to give it a hit with your fist maybe.

IIRC, you can get in by removing the headlights and unfasten the part the hood locks to.

Default Hood not unlatching on drivers side.

Thanks for any tips or tricks. I pulled the headlight but still couldn't get to the latch mechanism, I'm tall so I ended up laying underneath and could reach up to grab the rod and after a few prayers and hard yanks I got it to pop open, thank ya Lord lol. One bolt holding the latch mechanism to the hood stripped out and was gone the other was barely there so it wouldn't pull the short rod enough obviously. I ended up threading larger bolts in that were tight, I'm going to drill two holes and put self tappers in so it wont happen again.

Shoot some lithium grease on the latch assy also.
