Hi All
my 2001 cherokee hood won't stay closed on the driver's side. I lubricated it and it doesn't "catch" when the latch engages the mechanism. It happened once before and because the central latch was stuck, the entire hood popped open on the highway and smashed into the windshield, but it just dented the hood a bit.

I don't know what to call the thing on the underside of the hood, the "latch" to find a part for it. I could fiddle with it if I knew the inner mechanism. Something slides in that's attached to the wire that attaches to the cable that is pulled to open it. I can't get the sliding piece of metal to catch to hold the latch in place, closing the lid.

Any suggestions?

I also was told by the dealer that this was a common problem with this hood/latch.

i've never heard of it being a common problem, but just check out your local junkyards for a replacement latch.

I believe there is a small coil spring that pulls that piece and the cable back that is probably rusted and gone.
