Which is stronger?
So I've been Hearing from guys that run a Ford 8.8 rear axle that they are stronger then Dana 44's. Now I'm looking to do an easy rear axle swap. The Ford 8.8, if you find them with, come with 4:10 gears, Disc brakes, and the it is super easy to put it under my 98' cherokee. Plus its the same lug pattern as stock( 5 on 4 1/2"). What are the ups/downs of either axle. I'm currently unemployed so doing this on a budget is super important. I want/plan on spending around 300 bucks and thats cause i will have to regear my front Dana 30 to match the rearout of that money. Any links or input well help.

D44 is definately easier. It bolts right in.
Ford is sprung under. Will need shock mounts and leaf mounts welded on.
Both non-c clip both relatively same size.
GO D44. I just got a D44 with 3:55 (same ratio as my d35) for 300$ picked up. Bolts right in.

If it was an XJ, he wouldnt have to have converted from spring under to spring over.... It would have been super easy. I haven't been able to find an XJ Dana 44 for under 300 ever.... Plus IDK what XJ years came with a D44 other then 87....

The Ford 8.8 is a "c" clip style rear end. I would go with either, no matter what they will be stronger than what you have. I myself would run the 8.8 just for the fact that lockers are cheaper and you get 4.10's with disc brakes. They are both great axles

If you get an 8.8 from a v8 Explorer or Mountaineer you also get a LSD. Some v6 models had the LSD as an option but the v8"s always have it.

Your spec sheet says you have an 8 1/4" which is nearly the equal of the D44. The ford does come with disks, but is 1 1/2" narrower and doesn't mount up with out mods, but D35 disc can be added to the 8 1/4. Disc swap easier and cheaper than building the Ford axle. Dont forget what ever you do for gearing in the rear you have to do the same up front.
