Stripped out brake caliper bolt housing threads

Default Stripped out brake caliper bolt housing threads

I stripped out the threads that the bolt goes into that holds the caliper on. Not the bolt threads.
Anyone ever done this? What would be my best option?
I was thinking helicoil because if i tap and die it, i will have to use a bigger bolt which won't fit though the caliper.
Any suggestions

Weld up the hole and then re-tap it

Didn't think about that. I am not much of a welder, could possobly get access to one. i will keep that in mind.

Make sure ur rly careful with the helacoil.... i did it with my caliper and was a hair off center and ruined it. use a drill with a level on the top of it if you can.

I just put brand new calipers on mine and it only cost 16.99 a piece.... i vote new caliper

The threads are not in the caliper, they are on the axle side

You might consider brazing it shut then drill and tap. Brazing is a strong process. I have used it often to repair things. Weld or braze clean the area really good.

Not sure if there is enough room, but you could use the caliper as a jig. Connect one side and use the hole on the other side to center and drill your new hole. A right angle drill or drill adapter may work.

You might use this idea to mark and start the hole then use another jig to do the final drilling. Just a few thoughts.

i did it a few weeks ago. finding a 10mm helicoil wasn't an option due to my time schedule so i drilled the caliper pins out to accept a 3/8-16 bolt and helicoiled to match. very easy to do and with a bigger bolt / deeper threads should be as good as new. You do have a chance of messing it up if you drill off center or at an angle though

if you have access to a new knuckle that would be the best solution, suprizingly easy to swap out too.

I just bought a new knuckle at the junkyard and started from scratch... You have a real good chance of finding decent parts nowadays with cash for clunkers pouring in too....

happened to me too. i just put a nut on the end of the bolt. there is enough room to get one in there.

I also found this issue on the Cherokee I just purchase last week.

I elected for a new bolt and nut, same size and hardness so I had longer threads. I ground away the extra length on the bolt and ground away half of the thickness of a nut and fought them in place. It was a tight fit in placing the nut on. I hope if when I need new pads, the nut sticking out will not interfere with the pad and caliper.

Someday I might put on a new knuckle, maybe

Really! did you drill out the threads and use a longer bolt or just a longer bolt?
