Default Strange Oil Leak

Hello, I have a 1991 Xj with the 4.0L 6cyl. motor, and a AX-15 5 speed manual tranny. for the longest time I have been trying to track down this dripping oil leak I have. I thought it was the oil pan drain bolt, but it isn't then I made sure all the valve cover bolts were tight, some were loose so I made them tight, and the oil filter adapter shows no sign of leaking anywhere. I thought maybe the Rear Main Seal was leaking, so I had the motor steam cleaned and made everything is real clean. I drove it home from work 2 days ago and there was the same drops of oil again, I got under the car and everything was still clean and no signs of leaking anywhere. this has to be coming from somewhere. the engine oil is very clean, but the drops are very dirty and smell like gear oil. my question is, is it possible for the transmission front seal to be leaking and somehow finding its way to the oil pan drain plug bolt to drip ??? that is the only other possible solution I can think of...I hope to hear something soon and thank you in advance.

Yes it is possible to be leaking from the input shaft seal/bushing. Remove the fill plug and check if you need to add any.

This is an easy fix if you can pull the transmission.

Thanks, I will check it out. I was sort of hoping it was the tranny insted of the RMS, just because it is easier to take it to a transmission place for a seal kit than to find someone to repair the RMS. I will check out your link. and thank you for your input.

do not be afraid of the RMS... this is a simple change if you take your time and pay attention to the details. There is no need to pay someone to change out the rear main seal... do it yourself.
