Strange Knocking from engine.

Strange Knocking from engine.
have a 2000 cherokee with the straight-6, there is this odd knocking noise coming from the engine, i was laying underneath to try and identify where it was coming from, it sounding like it was right above me coming from the crankshaft or somewhere in that general area. the noise only comes around randomly, like its not EVERY time i start it up, just sometimes. and the noise disappears after shifting from park to reverse or drive. so its like when it gets load on the crankshaft? anyone had any experience with this? what could it possibly be?
