ok so today i drove to my moms (about an hour trip from where i live) and we decided to go out to eat. i get in my jeep and try to start it. it wont start. key turns on, starter turns the motor everything goes it just doesnt start. a quick shot of starter fluid helps tremindusly (idk how to spell that great) and so the past 3 times ive needed to start my xj i had to use starter fluid. why does my life suck?

Prob the fuel pump. Check the pressure at the rail.

fuel pump has a bad priming circuit. the priming circuit basically fluids the cylinders for startup.

Betting the pump is bad. Same symptoms. Mine wouldn't start I had to have it towed. Next day it started right up. Drove it for 3 more months and it crapped out. It was intermittent through those months.

Best bet is stock... for performance you can get an adjustable reg.. if you need more pressure... lots more mods have to go with it. Check out rockauto.com for some really good prices. I'm really excited about this site as I got a tps for almost half price and it works flawlessly.

Be sure to get a new strainer while you're there. It's kinda like a pre filter. What year?

awesome so today after driving for an hour i got off the interstate and pulled up to a stop light aaaand my jeep died.so im sitting at a busy intersection with no cell phone, no money, and no working vehicle. 3 tow truck, 4 jeeps and a ***** load of trucks drive by and none offer help. After a half hour someone finally stopped and towed me out of the intersection. cops show up and dont help me at all. after about 3 hours i finally got a tow truck to stop. my life sucks.

Sad story man! lol but reminds me of something similar that happened to me a long time ago. Had just bought a crappy used honda civic and it decided to just die on me in the middle of a 4 lane main road locally. Damn thing wouldn't start for nothing then a cop pulls up behind me lights on to warn traffic I guess and find out whats going on.The funny part is when he came to my window and asked " are you having car trouble?" LMAO I said " NOOOOOOO I just felt like sitting in the middle of a super busy street" haha he took my sarcasm well though and helped me get my heap pushed into a parking lot with out getting killed. As soon as we got it out of the street the pile fired right up just to spite me LMAO.
Any ways sorry for the hijack but your story inspired me to share one of my own.

To address your issue I would say first place to start would be to get a fuel pressure reading like what was already posted and then go from there.

If you're running on a budget (like me) you can get a fuel pump from the junkyard for probably about $5...then at least of it isn't the fuel pump, you didn't spend a lot on a part you didn't need that you can't take back...
