Sorry to hear bout your bad luck. If I see a xj sitting on the side of the road I always try to stop and help. I think its like a golden rule to help out a fellow xj owner around here . But anyways hopefully you can get the ol girl running again. Keep your head up it will get better

I bet you have lowered fuel pressure and P0171, engine bank 1 too lean, is on the horizon. You want to replace it before it REALLY leaves you stranded and you have to have it towed.
Buy a Bosch, and ONLY a bosch, fuel pump and install it ASAP. Amazon always has great prices. Got mine for 240 something shipped to me next day.

awesome so today after driving for an hour i got off the interstate and pulled up to a stop light aaaand my jeep died.so im sitting at a busy intersection with no cell phone, no money, and no working vehicle. 3 tow truck, 4 jeeps and a ***** load of trucks drive by and none offer help. After a half hour someone finally stopped and towed me out of the intersection. cops show up and dont help me at all. after about 3 hours i finally got a tow truck to stop. my life sucks.

k so i just heard back from the mechanic. the same neutral safety switch that was causeing my reverse lights to not come on, is also the culprit of my break down and not being able to start it. so it is being replaced and all should be well.....and then with my back up lights working again i can wire some aftermarket ones
but its still gonna be expensive as fuuuuh

So once again after about an hours drive I'm stranded again. My step dad busted out the test light and determined that its the coil pack. Which is good to know after getting 500 bucks worth of repairs done

So,, Neutral safety switch replaced ( they hardly ever go bad by the way just need to be cleaned after removal and adjusted,,,contacts etc.)......
have you tried to learn how to get the codes /diags from the jeep?
might be more going on that you know. crank sensor for instance, when that guy goes.....nothing you can do. 'cept replace it.
so.......... when you have lots of smoke you say, is it whitish, bluish, black? orange?
white== bad
black==very bad
bluish===time to pack it in.
anyway, good luck, hunker down get the manual, an study it.

well the smoke is white... so atleast its the lowest on the bad scale... right? and i just got it to the mechanic and they disagree with my step dad. idk they SHOULD fix it free of charge since they told me it was fixed and it wasnt... but idk i guess ill find out in a few hours when i go to pick it up. god i wish i could do my own work.... i just dont have the tools or space. but really the smoke is the least of my worries at the moment. cause i gotta deal with this stranded issue.... so new symptoms:
1 starts and runs fine from cold start
2 after long drives it will cut off when coming to a complete stop
3 wont start again till it cools off
4 after trying to restart it after stalling i dont have any spark
5 s*** makes me very sad cause i love my jeep
