i think most if not all semi trucks have straight six diesel engines, something like 15 or so liters.....they are HUGE

I've been involved with 'a few', and work at a truck performance shop, which always helps, but the 5 cylinder into an XJ is new to me. I'm not looking for a 'monster' setup, and use my XJ as a family camping / safari type rig. 200 HP, and 300 ft.lbs at the wheels are my target numbers, and I know the 300 has that in it. My biggest hang up is that it IS my daily driver, including hauling my kids around: swap has to wait till I can go without the Jeep for a week or so, to ensure its done right, and reliable.
how far along in the swap process are you? driveline choices? email is in my profile - PM me if you'd like to swap notes...might help both of us out.

I have not contributed much in this forum, so I figured I would give some input to this question since I too wondered this and gathered tons of information on I6 engines vs V6 engines.
Technically I6 engines are harmonically better balanced than V6 engines.
I6 engines have an even distribution in weight, vertical combustion of the piston.
V6 engines have an angled combustion of the pistons and uneven swing (i.e. two cylinders ignite, on one side while one cylinder ignites in the oposite creating a swing).
I6 engines also have less internal moving parts and more torq. This all translates to a longer lasting engine over all.
The biggest reason why I6 engines where discontinued even when proven in reliability is because they are too long and more difficult to manufacture than aluminum V6 engines. V6 engines are easy to move, handle, manufacture and they fit in any engine compartment.
BMW untill recently used I6 engines in all of their vehicles with only difference in dissplacement because of the harmony in a running I6 engine. Toyota used I6 engines for the infamous Supra which would take butality in boost, when turboed.
Hope this helps.... Go I6!!

Apparently there is bias by some as far as the powerchoke goes. Typically they arent as powerful, and they dont get near the mileage most CTD's do. I know some one you say "I dont care about mileage, blah blah blah" But when you have gobs of tq and hp and still get 25mpg, its nice. CTD's are the most reliable I have seen. If I had to have a powerchoke, it would be a modded 7.3L but the newer ones are even more of a waste. And "racing" on the street doesnt really count. If ford or GM came with CTD's I'd get one, but they dont. And the new 6.7L CTD blows teh rest away.
