Correct.

No, actually the Buick 3.8L holds that distinction. Esp. the turbocharged ones.

The 2.8L is not even remotely close to the V8 based series. They have 2 different V set up's at GM, a 60* V series (2.8,3.1,3.4,3.4DOHC, 3.8B,3.8C) and the 90* V series (Pretty much everything else that's a V that GM makes.) Every 90* V is based on the tried and true SBC that came out way back when in the 1950's. There isn't even enuff space on the forum to start into why the 60*'s suck. The best out of the bunch are the 3.1's and the 3.8C's.

The Vortec engines are good for 2 reasons, intake gasket sealing and cylinder head/combustion chamber design, other than that, it's the same old V8 long block. And Allison has been their own company ever since the 40's with their aircraft engines, after that they branched out into heavy duty driveline stuff.

Technically, but with the inlines, their are no "partner" cylinders, so each con rod gets it's own 2 mains supporting it. Traditionally, inline engines are always smoother that V-style engines, the smoothest running ones ever made were the inline 8's way back in the 20's and such. They also run more smoothly due to the position of the crank during the firing pulses.

My 91 Dodge Ram 350 has 400lbs of torque stock from the factory, much more than the Ford or GM diesels had at the time, and with the turn of a screw power increases as much as 70HP and 97lbs of torque. Free power is nice. Cummins is the best diesel by far, while the Duramax is pretty good I will stick to an engine that has proven its durability for a very long time. Powerjokes just sit at the service lane at the dealership waiting for head gaskets to be replaced and what ever else breaks.

Okay, since this thread is so jacked up; I have to interject this into discussion. Here's the best engine ever built:

OM617.950

The revised OM617.950 also displaced 3.0 L but was now 2998 cc with a 90.9 mm bore and 92.4 mm stroke. Power output was 110 hp (82 kW). This engine was used in the W116 300SD from 1978 to 1980. It was the world's first turbocharged production diesel sedan.

Mercedes-Benz OM617.95

[edit] OM617.951

The OM617.951 also displaced 2998 cc with a 90.9 mm bore and 92.4 mm stroke. Power output was 123 hp (91 kW) at first but rose to 125 hp (92 kW) in 1983. Torque was rated at 170 lb·ft (230 N·m).
Applications:

This engine has reports of old farts still driving them with over a million miles on them. In my years of working at various shops, I've seen them with over 4 and 5 hundred thousand miles...still lag, lag, lag, laging away. The only thing these engines need is valve lash adjustment, and an injector overhaul/ shimming- maintenance that is only required about every 130,000 miles or so. (Some people never do the above)

You might not be "first on race day" with this engine, and the motor itself doesn't sound too sexy or anything, but the simple fact exists: This engine will run maintenance free forever. Many of these cars are still running up north when they go to the crusher, because the car is rusted plum out...but it still runs and drives.

With regards to running this engine on free fuel (vegetable oil)- this engine's design incorporates the best of both worlds: Prechamber cylinder head design, so the vegetable oil doesn't spray directly on the piston, and they also have a Bosch P series injection pump (similar to what's on the 94-early 98.5 6BT Cummins). This pump is a little engine in itself with a crankshaft and pistons. They won't fail like a Standyne rotary or Bosch rotary pump will.

This injection pump is like any other- it can be turned up to increase rail pressure. Advance the timing on the IP, crank up the fuel, regulate the wastegate, and you'll have this: (next thread)

Nice vehicle choice I've got a stock 95 maxima with almost 255,000 miles and it still runs as strong as the day I bought it 11 years ago. As good as it is, though, the most bulletproof engine I've ever owned was in my first car...81 Supra with the 2.8L inline 6. Granted it was before they started putting real power in Supras, but that thing was a tank...torquey, smooth, quiet, no vibes AT ALL.

so does mine...it just hit 150K..it leaks a drop or two.

The race is on for the first Benz powered Cherokee on the CF then! You're on!
Truth be known, you know WAY more about it than I- this will be my first diesel conversion, where as you're a veteran. I'm sure you'll get done before me. When time (and money) allows, I'd like to rid myself of this 7.3 and install a 96-98 6BT P pumped Cummins in my truck- 12V short block; 24V head.

On the Youtube viedo, the post says that it's supercharged. This would explain the throttle response. I know nothing about the car, but I laugh with a psycholoic, mad-scientist chucke when I watch the video.
