So here is the issue at hand. I'm currently working on some deferred maintenance problems and the drivers door speaker issue is one of the problems. In my case the positive (green) speaker wire was sheared off between the firewall and door, I've soldered in a new section of wire and I have conductivity between the speaker plug and the one behind the kickplate on both positive and negative wires. When I plug the speaker in sometimes it will work for a while but then the whole system shuts off like a fuse is blowing, sometimes it is "blown" right away when I turn the accessories back on after install, however I've checked every fuse and none are bad. Thinking it was a bad speaker I've put in a new working stock speaker from another jeep and that one turns the system off as well. By taking a cable off the battery and leaving it off for a long period of time (shortest I have found it to work is 3hrs) the radio will restart, with the speaker out.

Whats going on? Has anyone experienced this problem before or have any suggestions on where to turn next, thanks.

When you repaired the green wire, is the repair properly insulated? Did you thoroughly check over the negative wire? How's the harness connector for the door looking? It may be worth checking out if you have continuity between the wires from the radio and the body earth with the radio and speaker disconnected. There could be a break elsewhere in the harness.

 

I am a big stereo geek so I have some things I would do for sure. I don't know about the 2001 but my stereo was super easy to get to in my 94. I don't know your experience level or what you are willing to do but you know how to solder so that gives me some idea. Anyway...I would just chop the wire at the head unit and run a whole new feed. You can also chop the wire at the head unit, connect some alligator clips and connect them to your original speaker. That would tell you a lot. If you just strip the sheathing on the wire and connect the alligator clips you will not be eliminating the potential short the original wire may be causing. If the speaker works through the head unit with the clips...just run a new wire. If it does not...there is a problem with your stereo. The shorted wire could have blown the channel or done some damage. Honestly if you get this far might as well order a nice head unit from Crutchfield....they give you everything. And then you can sync your phone and all that good stuff. Okay so that is what I got for now!

 

It's insulated properly just getting back to the radio tonight; u-joints came in so I moved on to something that didn't want to make me drive the car into a lake. So far i'm thinking break in the harness gonna probably run new wires direct, thought for a sec that it was broken wires I left in the door harness (green/black & green/red) but I think saw those were for the infinity system plus they aren't hooked up to anything. I had the radio tested a few years ago and I was told that all the channels were working.
