The cone air filter allows more cold air to pass through your engine giving you more HP and possibly better fuel economy.

Are u talking about eliminating the stock airbox? If so, u'll be taking in more hot air.

I agree seems silly to get rid of the air box. It also seems silly to put a cone filter in a stock air box, which still only has a 3x4 intake hole.

It's that 2" throttle body that's the restriction....not the airbox or the opening in it or the air filter.

The air filter can't cool the air that goes in it.If you come out with one that can then you'll be rich for sure.A coldair intake has a partial box around it to keep the hot engine air out and brings cold in from the grill area.Thats why it's called a cold air intake.

I remember K&N proving mathematically that the volume of air was more important than wether or not it was "cold". So I second what djb383 said.

So I take it that i would be wasting my time changing the airbox/cleaner.

Yes, but physics state that colder air has more mass per unit of volume. If you have 2 ballons filled with the same amount of air, but one has hot and one has cold, the hot will be bigger. This means less oxygen per unit area. Colder air is better. What I did was fit a cone filter and build an air intake that used the airbox as a heat shield but I cut the square opening and fit a 3" metal inlet.

There are some aftermarket filter elements that will flow slightly more air, at WOT, than the stock type paper element. However, 99.9999% of driving is not at WOT and the stock system will flow more air than the engine draws under 99.9999% of driving conditions. That's my story (opinion) and I'm stickin' to it.

i made my own box from a stock Dodge Durango box. Just cut the metal to go around behind the cone filter and it blocks out the engine heat. Or you can cut the stock air box. it doesnt have to fit like a glove, just enough to block out hot air. it will get cold air without too regaurdless because the cone goes right to the grill
