Did you properly torque the lugnuts in a star pattern. Are the rear shocks trashed?

have you recently lifted it? And are you sure it's the rear? I just fixed a massive death wobble on mine by getting an alignment done...I didn't realize it was out, but it was off 3 inches.

well the way i would do it is probally jacked up so it drops. so you have get the full tighten.... but level will work the same. but just maky sure you keep each side of the u bolt tightend as level as possible. and if you are to do it level. i would still support it with a jack, because if you take the u bolts off that axle is gonna fall.,, but loosen them up to even.. then tighten them to as even as you can get them.

Check to see if your u bolts are torqued down right, and also check you torsion bar, jeep and dodge torsion bars are notorious for going out, i've gone through two already on my 99 xj

...unless you're talking about a rear sway bar(which some XJs don't have and wouldn't cause his problem if his has one) XJs don't have torsion bars.

shocks? if the ride is bouncy, or if there is fluid leaking from the shock cylinder.

It'd be noticable, they are typically rectangular pieces of steel that are welded onto the driveshaft. if yours is missing one or is severely bent...most likely thats your problem.
