I sanded the switch. i sanded the parking brake assembly at the top and bottom of the screw down points and the body down to the metal for good ground. the wire to the light seems to be good and the fuse is not blown nor is the light, i replaced the light's for the low fuel ind, the brake and the abs even though i dont have abs. What else is there to do? can i run a jumper and if so where from and where to?

Apparently this may be a wiring issue.
HAve you/ DAPO dont anything under the dash/in console?
The BRAKE light illuminates for TWO reasons.
First...Parking/Emergency brake being applied.
Second...loss of pressure in brake system.
But since you are applying the e-brake and it does not light, I am led to believe there is a short from there to the light itself.
Console wiring is easy. Dash wiring is harder to check.
To double-check the dash wiring, open hood, remove wire connector from either the master (newer) or proportioning valve (older). Not sure which a 97 would fall under
Turn key to ON.
IF BRAKE illuminates, you know the dash wiring is ok and you need to concentrate on the wiring coming from the e-brake.
DO NOT forget to reconnect the plug onto the master/proportioning valve, otherwise this thread will turn to "Can't get light to go OUT"

My 94 has it on PP. I would believe that would be one of the things they changed in 96.
Do you have the slender alum master w/ plastic reservoir?
Mine's the big honking steel master w/ that painful to remove reservoir lid retainer.
(Closest thing I could find to an ouchie)

I will try that and see what happens. In the process know of detailing the interior while i put every theing back together. Almost looks good as new. still going to try and take it to another service place to get it inspected. owner manual asys the light just tells you the e brake is set. dont know why it has to light to pass /va state inspection.

Well had another place inspect and they passed it even though dash light not lit. they mentioned it to me and said to possibly check a connection under the vehicle on the brake lines. eventhough I'm legal for another year and got another month free. just 9 more months for a free year. HIP HIP HORRAY! Thanks to all for there help!
