anyone ever start there xj and then after it idles for a second the starter gear starts grinding on the fly wheel? only did this a few times but has been 20 degrees and under

hi, same with mine... when i turn the key to acc position the starter starts to operate and wont stop. any ideas? i have disconnected the thin wire from the starter and this is the way i can start it.

have You found the solution?

if your bendix is hanging up grinding on the flyhwheel you prob need a new starter

yes, i thought about bendix, but why it starts cranking when key is in acc position and not start... I also thought about ignition switch... it is cold too, about 20...

Ok just last night i went to start my jeep and the grinding came back, yea its been under 10 degrees. But this time it would turn over and start on acc and the on possition, really weird. Any clues on if its the starter or the ignition? need help please thanks

My starter was doing the same thing,go to start it,would start then the starter would not disengadge.Bad starter soloniod,replaced my starter,hasn't done it again.

Anytime a starter is acting up just pull it and go have it tested. They are easy to remove and put back in so it's not a major task.

the reason is different... plug out two ABS switches located under the hood on the left, in that box.
