Stereo antenna
Hello all, since I bought this jeep, (January of this year) I've been having problems with a lot of static, I cleaned all the grounds as suggested, bought and installed one of those antenna amplifiers, nothing changed, I thought about swapping out the antenna and found out that the PO had installed a cb radio and tapped into the existing antenna, when he removed it, he never put the antenna back together on the passenger side behind the panel under the dash, being he cut the wire would that have any effect? I did reattach then but it only helped a little, can I splice back some and twist then together or do I have to replace the whole antenna setup?

static you say? my 94 was doing that too. It turned out the antenna was a two piece. It connected under the passenger side dash on the right wall. It had a spring in the middle where the 2 pieces went together. took out the spring jammed it back together problem was solved.

maybe you will have different luck but mine works better without the spring period. Picks up more stations too. I think I crimped it with pliers or something so it wouldn't come apart.

A heartfelt thanx for this post! I was also having reception problems and it was the spring joint. Pulled the spring, taped it tight together and all is right with the world now.

Found this old thread yesterday and it turned out to be very useful!
I am in process of installing a new modern basic bluetooth radio into my 89 XJ and while doing it decided to see if I can find similar antenna cable joint in my Jeep?
Sure enough, I found it behind the passenger side kick panel and the antenna cable connection had been disconnected completely!
This explains the lousy FM and non-existing AM reception with the old radio.
I was able to slip a long piece of heat shrink tube over the connection and plug it back together. The tube shrunk in pretty tight and will certainly hold it together next 30 years..
I wonder how many XJ owners have had this same problem over the years and never figured it out?
