Default Steering Wheel Question!

Hey I'm new to the Jeep scene. I've got a '97 Cherokee and I wanna re-do a lot of things.. starting with the steering wheel. Since there is an airbag, is there a safe way to pop off the steering wheel and replace it with a different one? I was thinking about this one..

So any feedback should be helpful. Thanks!

disconnect the battery?

The few times I have taken airbags off I haven't had one deploy. They are usually held on by 2 bolts. After you take them out you can carefully lift the airbag off and disconnect the wire harness.

Sell it.

If you do decide to go this route make sure the battery has been disconnected for at least a half an hour, the bag can still deploy otherwise.

I've heard that its against the law to do this.If it came with an airbag then it has to stay. Not sure how true that is but I would check into it.

yeah this is a good point. its like removing seat belts on vehicles that were equipped with them. yeah there are older cars out there that never had them (i suppose its legal to drive without modding it), but you can't just take out the seat belts in an xj and call it good.

but anyway, good luck. I was thinking about replacing my steering wheel too at some point. the leather is starting to peel away. I guess I'll end up getting a cover for it. you could go that route if youre replacing it for a similar reason...

that is probably going to depend on your state's laws. i have taken the one out of my 91 bmw to put on a different bmw steering wheel and it passes inspection fine. i have also swapped another bmw for a momo and had no issues but i don't think that is something on the texas inspection checklist.

it is a good idea to google your local safety inspection laws so you know

sweet, thanks for all the input. yea im not sure if its legal or not, but I need an inspection soon so ill definately find out after thats done. other than the laws i think it should be easy enough to do. and yea the leather is not even there on the top of the steering wheel. i could get a cover but id rather get a whole new steering wheel.
