I'm new owner of a 1993 Grand Cherokee Laredo and have several things to fix.
What is wrong when the steering wheel is not centered when going straight? When driving along straight down the road the steering wheel is turned bout 30 degrees to the left. This partially obstructs the view of the dash gauges.
Is here a way to fix this?
thanks

is it lifted? if the PO installed a drop pitman arm or removed the original for any reason he may have put it on in the wrong position. Just another possibility - sounds like a lot just from an bad alignment.

You've got to be kidding, alignment? He can fix it himself. Grab some wrenches, loosen the sleeve on your drag link and rotate it till the steering wheel is straight.

Thanks I'll try this tonight. It does seem pretty far off for a mere alignment to straighten. And would it get off center like this due to a collision like hitting a dear or snow bank or a curb?
much appreciated.
much appreciated.
Success. It worked. Thank you for the photo and instructions on how to change the position of the steering wheel. I made an adjustment, took a test drive, adjusted a bit more, tested and perfect. It was easy. Much appreciated.

now you should count your rotations both left and right. see if they're the same.
because, as mentioned earlier, something else could be wrong to cause the steering wheel to be off center. like the pitman arm installed incorrectly, or track bar mount shifted, etc.
talk about a band-aid fix...
i guess it is possible someone installed the drag link themselves and didn't thread the tie rod end enough/too much.
i'd be looking closer tho.

You never mentioned if it was pulling to the left or right, just the steering wheel being off center, if its pulling you should get an alignment IMHO if not your good to go...TjOriginally Posted by sglynn

Thanks, nope no pulling. Steering is smooth and pretty tight. Wheel is centered now when going straight. My wife likes it better that way, although I try not to let her in the left seat. The power assist makes turning effortless. I'll watch for front tire wear. I also better retighten those lock bolts on the drag link. And yes I learned something and will pass it on. Much appreciated.
But the tire wear problem I am having is on the rear tires. I've been told this is chronic problem with AWD cars. Looks like the rear tires wear on the outside edge. But this is a topic for another thread.

after seeing this image, can someone help me to identify names of components? i am somehow lost in translation.
What is sway bar? similar to U shape right? isnt that stabilizer bar? connects two sides of wheels at back or front if it is not independent suspension.
What is track bar? links body to axle diagonally, is that correct? so what is track arm?? i know what lower or upper suspension arms are but what are control arms?
if somebody clarify these for me, that would be great tips either. i will buy some bushings but names are confusing for me when i am reading details on listings over ebay.
