Default Steering too stiff?

Hey guys -Steering seems pretty stiff in my 2000 XJ. PS moans when turning. I flushed it (it appeared to have ATF in it from PO). I also replace the corroded lines (pressure and return). Don't see bubbles in the reservoir. I jacked it up and turned the wheels...seems too tight at the steering wheel. Does the steering dampener provide a lot of resistance?

Wondering how difficult it should be to steer left-right by pushing at the wheel itself...takes me about 5-7 seconds to push (at the wheel) from a left turn to a right turn when its on jack stands. Is this normal? There is about 1-2 inches of play in the steering wheel. Could the steering box be going out?
Thanks for the help!

Sounds like you dont have power steering anymore. ATF is about the same as power steering fluid, both are hydraulic fluids but with different additives. You might need a new pump

The steering dampener is valved to resist more abrupt movements such as bumps and rocks while at speed. It should not affect the steering itself unless damaged in some way. I too have a bit of slop in the steering wheel but steering is smooth and easy. I would say the pump has something to do with you problem. ATF is definitely not the right fluid for our pumps and it most likely took it's toll.

You can pull a PS pump rather easily at the JY or get a rebuild kit for the one you have if money is tight. Probably looking at $70 for a pump at the auto store chains.

Thanks for the help. The PS seems to be working...somewhat...but the pump must be on its way out. I was surprised at how stiff the steering is with the wheels off the ground and the engine off, but maybe thats normal. I haven't spent a lot of time jacking up cars and turning the wheels manually for comparison sake. I'll rebuild or replace the pump and see whats what. Thanks for the replies!

UMM, Yes your steering would be stiff if the engine is off. Try it with the engine on.

I just had my front axle up last night doing brake work and I was able to turn the steering system by the rotor with little effort.

Thanks JeepDeep...this is exactly what I was curious about. Something is not right with mine...it takes considerable effort to turn at the rotor. I think I'll disconnect the dampener, test, then loosen gearbox a little, test...etc. I would certainly welcome any other ideas as well. Thanks again man.

Hit the zerks on all the ball joints and work it back and forth first and see if it helps. It's the easiest thing to try. If it doesn't help you'll have to start removing components one by one like you said.
