Default steering tight after replaceing gear box

97 country 4.0 replaced my steering gear box today. old one the pinon shaft bearing was shot. it steered just fine i cycled the new one to bleed all the air out of it. i have no wining coming from the pump but the steering is kinda tight when turning. could there be a air bubble? also should i remove the return line and bleed it that way?

Just drive it, the the air will work out on it's own (keep the fluid level up).

Not something I'm very familiar with. Just wanted to mention, on my 90, that's the first thing that slipped when my belt was a tad loose. OK dry, but wet, I had "reduced" power steering. (no squeal)

It's brand new, out of the box? Resistance is even, not more when towards straight as opposed to turned? I ask that because if the lash is adjusted too tight, it will bind more turning towards the straight ahead position. At least others do.

I replaced the steering gear box on my 89 Cherokee. The steering is noticeably tight. I just attribute it to the difference of a 22 year old worn sloppy unit compared to a new unit.

Yep. This is what they felt like when they were new. I replaced my box and my stabilizer and now it's pretty tight.

Do you think they just got the lash too tight? And could I just back it off a little?

I couldn't say. Old Chevy and Ford boxes, as I remember, will bind like I said, straight ahead. Preload?

It was finally nice enough to work on it. Backed off the lash just a little and now it is steering perfect. Thanks for the input everyone

Hey Great! Those can be tricky, might keep an eye on it. I think that is better done on the bench. One of these days I need to take a shot at going the other way with mine.

Increasing the lash won't fix worn gears. It just wears them out even faster.
