I have a 1991 Jeep cherokee and lately when I turn either left or right, my steering column makes a popping noise. When this happens I can also feel it slightly.
Any ideas on what this could be?

Frame side track bar. I'd bet money that's what it is. Either the bracket to frame mounting bolts came loose (there are 4 of them to tighten). Or the tie rod end to bracket has gotten loose or worn to the point that it's popping.
Are you lifted at all?

trac bar gets my vote to. I had the same popping noise and it kept doing it until I snapped the trac bar completely lol

Yeah... And you don't want to do that. So I'd take a look there first. If it looks bad at all, replace that before you're driving down the highway at 65 and it breaks and really hurt yourself.

thank god mine broke in the trails and not the highway. but getting out of the trails with pretty much no steering sucked. and to the OP do your self a favor and go buy yourself a nice jks trac bar and you will never have a problem with trac bars ever againOriginally Posted by 1996sportXJ

Check the steering shaft too, there's a plastic-filled isolator section that will do that when it goes bad.
If you cant figure it out, get your wife or buddy or neighbor to sit in the seat and wiggle the steering back and forth while you lay under and find out what is moving unnaturally.
