Default steering bind during 4x4

i didnt see this anywhere when i was searching. I have an 89 xj and when i put it in 4x4 and i turn the wheel over half way the steering acts like it binds up there is a clicking and it doesnt want to "go". i have to straighten out to move forward. it isnt rubbing anywhere and it doesnt happen in 2x4. i checked the u joints and they seem fine. there is a vacuum on the axle and i took off the lines and it looked like there was oil in it, is this the cause of the clicking?

Not to sound like a smart ***, but were you on asphalt? and are your tires larger? and really look at everything from u joints and their ubolt things (brain fart) and make sure they don't look at all scratched. I was having issues like that, checked, didn't see anything out of the normal so I didn't look... Turns out I should have... My drive shaft fell off on the next drive in 4wd.

ima go ahead and geuss that you either have a 231, or had your 242 in part time 4... when in either of the aforementioned 4wd modes, the front DS is constantly getting drive force applied to it. so on dryer/cleaner surfaces, you will get a binding issue.

Diggin up an older thread with a quick question.

I got a 96 with NP231. Would I have this binding issue going through fine sand? I wanna take it through some dunes on a beach and just wanna make sure I wont get this binding doing it
